AstroTurf Party Decoration
- For this project, you’ll need:
- Number or name design
- AstroTurf (can be found at most home improvement stores)
- Utility Knife
To start this project, you’ll need a font that will match your party design. The number I’m using is roughly 24” tall. Using Acrobat or another PDF reader, print the file out. Make sure it is set to “Poster” setting so it will span multiple pages and be as large as your design. You can do this at home or at a print shop such as FedEx. You can also change the scale to make it larger or smaller depending on how big you want your design. Mine printed out on six sheets of 8.5” x 11” paper.
Next, trim out each sheet of paper and tape them all together to create the large number. Cut your number out. This will be your tracing guide.
Get your astroturf out and flip it over so the backing is facing up. Take your number and place it on the backing – make sure to flip your number over so it’s reverse. I made this mistake the first time and ended up with a backwards number when I flipped the finished piece over! Using a sharpie, trace your number onto the backside of the astroturf.
Using a utility knife, cut out your number. Please be careful as it can be tricky to cut the astroturf depending on how thick it is. Make sure you have some kind of mat or thick cardboard underneath since it will cut through the astroturf.
Flip the astroturf over and you are finished! See how easy that was?! You may need to trim some of the loose strings from the edges with scissors.
This DIY is super versatile. An age, your child’s name, even a shape would all turn out cool. I created “JACKSON” for this party – look how cool this turned out! And the best part about this is that you could hang it in their room after the party!
